Barcelona Agree £65.4m Rodri Deal as Man City Lose Midfield Linchpin

August 16, 2026 at 5:41 pm

Barcelona are closing in on one of the summer’s biggest transfers after Manchester City accepted a package worth around £65.4 million for Rodri.

Barcelona Finally Get Their Man

Barcelona’s persistence has paid off, with Manchester City accepting their latest offer for Rodri after knocking back earlier approaches from the LaLiga champions. The deal is reported to be worth up to €76.5 million, around £65.4 million, with €60 million guaranteed and the remainder tied to add-ons.

The 30-year-old is expected to sign a four-year contract running until 2030. Rodri had entered the final year of his City deal and had made clear his desire to return to Spain, giving Barcelona some useful leverage at the negotiating table.

Real Madrid had also been interested, but Barcelona ultimately won the race. Rodri is now expected to complete the formalities before being unveiled by his new club, with Barça reportedly hoping to have him presented around the Joan Gamper Trophy.

City Cash In Before Contract Clock Runs Out

Manchester City are losing a player who has been at the heart of their most successful era.

Rodri made 298 appearances across seven seasons after arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2019. He collected 12 major trophies with City, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League, where he scored the winner against Inter Milan in the 2023 final. He also claimed the Ballon d’Or in 2024.

With only a year remaining on his contract, City faced an awkward choice: sell now for a healthy fee or risk watching his value tumble as January approached. Barcelona’s improved package eventually provided an exit both sides could live with.

Rodri missed City’s 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal after recently returning from minor back surgery, and his departure leaves new manager Enzo Maresca with an immediate midfield problem before the Premier League campaign gets moving.

Barcelona Add Another World Cup Winner

For Barcelona, the attraction is obvious. Rodri brings control, experience and the ability to dictate matches from the base of midfield, while his arrival also reunites him with several members of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad.

He joins a midfield already containing Pedri, Gavi and Dani Olmo, giving Barcelona another elite option in an area where Hansi Flick can hardly complain about being short of technicians.

There is a fitness caveat. Rodri underwent back surgery after the World Cup and may need time before he is ready for regular competitive football. Barcelona are expected to put him through further medical checks before completing the move.

What The Transfer Means For Bettors

For football bettors, Rodri’s departure is the part worth watching closely. City are not simply losing another midfielder. They are losing the player who spent years controlling the speed and shape of their biggest matches.

That makes City’s next moves particularly important for Premier League outright and Champions League markets. The club have already begun reshaping the midfield and continue to be linked with further reinforcements, including Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have added another heavyweight to a squad already expected to challenge on several fronts. If Rodri returns to full fitness quickly, bookmakers may have another reason to trim Barça’s longer-term prices.

Transfers do not settle title races in August, of course. But losing Rodri is about as close as Manchester City get to removing a load-bearing wall, and bettors may want to see what replaces it before treating the old City assumptions as gospel.
