Payton Pritchard has turned a bigger role in Boston into a significant payday. The Boston Celtics guard has agreed to a contract extension worth approximately $44.2 million over two seasons, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Reported on October 13, the agreement follows Pritchard’s most productive NBA season. A player once known primarily for his contributions off the bench has become a more substantial part of Boston’s offense, and the Celtics are committing to that development before his existing contract expires.
The extension begins with the season starting in 2028. It also includes a mutual option for the following season, making that final year an important part of the agreement rather than an unconditional commitment to remain together through 2030.
A Larger Role Changed the Case for Paying Pritchard
Pritchard averaged 17.0 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds last season, setting career highs in all three categories. He appeared in 79 games and started 50, compared with just 17 starts across his first five NBA seasons combined.
That change in responsibility is central to understanding the deal. Boston was asking him to contribute over longer stretches and take on more of the work involved in running an offense. His production increased alongside those demands.
The assists are particularly relevant. Scoring more can come from receiving additional shots, but creating opportunities for teammates adds another dimension to a guard’s value. Pritchard’s latest season gave Boston evidence that he could provide both.
His rise also followed an established contribution to winning. Pritchard helped the Celtics capture the 2024 NBA championship and received the 2025 Sixth Man of the Year award before taking on his expanded role last season.
At 28, he has spent his entire NBA career in Boston since the Celtics selected him 26th overall out of Oregon in 2020. The extension rewards a player whose responsibilities have grown considerably within the same organization.
The Raise Arrives After His Current Contract
Pritchard is still playing under the four season, $30 million agreement he signed in 2023. His scheduled salary is approximately $7.8 million for the upcoming season and $8.3 million for the next.
The new agreement adds seasons beyond that existing contract. It does not replace his current salary with a $22 million paycheck immediately, an important distinction when assessing what the move means for Boston’s payroll.
The reported extension averages roughly $22.1 million per season, although an average does not mean the salary is identical in each year. It represents a substantial increase from his current deal and reflects how much his standing has changed.
For the Celtics, the practical benefit is greater clarity about a significant future expense. For Pritchard, the agreement establishes the terms of a major raise without requiring him to wait until his current contract ends.
The mutual option adds flexibility around the final season. Its presence means the headline value should be read alongside the contract structure, rather than treated as a simple promise that Pritchard will play both additional seasons in Boston.
Boston Settles the Question Before the Extension Deadline
The agreement arrives ahead of the October 19 extension deadline. Had the sides failed to reach a deal within that window, they could have resumed extension negotiations in July 2027.
There was no immediate danger of losing Pritchard to free agency because his existing contract already covered two more seasons. The decision was about whether to establish his next agreement now or leave that discussion for another offseason.
Boston has chosen to act after seeing him deliver through a larger workload. That gives the extension a clear sporting basis, while leaving Pritchard with the challenge of sustaining the level that earned it.
The next test comes on the court. Another productive season would strengthen Boston’s decision to invest early and demonstrate that Pritchard’s latest improvement can become a consistent feature of the Celtics’ offense.
