Ngumoha’s Two Assists Help Liverpool Overturn Villarreal Lead and Stay Perfect in Europe

October 21, 2026 at 11:34 am

Rio Ngumoha helped Liverpool recover from two goals down to beat Villarreal by 4 to 3 at Anfield on October 20, providing two assists as the club maintained its perfect start to the Champions League.

Alexis Mac Allister scored twice, with Ronald Araujo and Florian Wirtz also finding the net. Liverpool now has nine points from three league phase matches, although another evening of defensive problems made those points considerably harder to collect.

For manager Andoni Iraola, the victory brought encouragement from an emerging attacker and a successful tactical adjustment. It also showed how much work remains to make Liverpool’s performances more secure.

Ngumoha Turns His Opportunity Into a Decisive Performance

Iraola made six changes to his starting lineup, giving Ngumoha a place alongside fellow young players Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas. Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola began on the bench.

Ngumoha’s influence became especially important as Liverpool tried to recover. His cross found Araujo at the far post for the equalizer just before halftime. After the break, he beat defenders and delivered the pass that allowed Mac Allister to put the hosts ahead.

The 18-year-old completed seven of his eight attempted dribbles, according to Opta. That ability to carry the ball past opponents gave Liverpool a way to open space when possession alone was not producing enough clear opportunities.

Opta also recorded Ngumoha as the third youngest player to provide multiple assists in a Champions League match, aged 18 years and 52 days. The achievement adds substance to a performance that strengthened his case for further involvement.

Iraola praised his willingness to improve, while emphasizing that his development remains incomplete. The manager highlighted Ngumoha’s growing comfort on the right, his improving endurance and his determination to continue the move that created Mac Allister’s second goal.

A Halftime Switch Helps Liverpool Regain Control

The recovery also required a change in Liverpool’s shape. Wirtz replaced Araujo at halftime, with Ryan Gravenberch moving to right back.

Iraola explained afterward that Villarreal’s midfield movement had created problems without the ball. Their players were moving into central areas, leaving Araujo uncomfortable following them inside.

The manager believed Gravenberch could handle those defensive movements while also supporting Ngumoha in possession. He confirmed that Araujo was physically fine, identifying the substitution as a response to the game rather than an injury setback.

Wirtz then supplied a direct attacking contribution. His low finish from Cody Gakpo’s pass made the score 4 to 2, arriving just three minutes after Mac Allister had given Liverpool the lead.

Mac Allister Supplies the Finishes Liverpool Needs

Before Liverpool could take control, it had to repair a damaging opening. Georges Mikautadze scored in the fourth minute after intercepting Virgil van Dijk’s misplaced header toward Alisson. Sergi Cardona doubled Villarreal’s advantage in the 29th minute.

Mac Allister began the response seven minutes later, heading in a Kostas Tsimikas corner. Araujo’s equalizer in first half stoppage time meant Liverpool reached the interval level despite its difficult start.

The Argentine midfielder then timed his arrival to meet Ngumoha’s delivery in the 65th minute, finishing from close range. His two goals gave Liverpool a reward for its pressure before Wirtz extended the advantage.

Nine Points Provide Progress, but the Defense Remains a Concern

Villarreal still threatened to take something from the match. Ayoze Perez hit the post before Tani Oluwaseyi scored in the 87th minute, leaving Liverpool to protect a single goal lead through the closing stages.

Liverpool finished with 22 shots to Villarreal’s 14, but the visitors’ chances explain why the result remained uncertain. The hosts have now conceded three goals in each of their last two Champions League matches, winning both.

Iraola acknowledged that Liverpool had started too casually and allowed Villarreal back into contention late on. Those are immediate issues to address before the Premier League meeting with Brighton this weekend.

Ngumoha’s display gives the manager another strong attacking option for that assignment. The next challenge is combining that threat with a performance that requires fewer emergency repairs at the other end.
