Joao Felix Slips to Al-Nassr as Career Transfer Total Nears £195m – Football’s Most Expensive Journeymen Ranked

July 31, 2025 at 6:35 am

Joao Felix’s move to Al-Nassr at just 25 has left many Portugal fans stunned. Once touted as the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo, the Benfica academy product seemed destined for greatness after a breakout season earned him a €127.2m (£113m) transfer to Atletico Madrid in 2019.

But despite flashes of brilliance, Felix never found consistency. A £47.2m switch to Chelsea didn’t reignite his spark, and after a short loan to AC Milan, he’s now landed in Saudi Arabia in a deal worth just £26m. His total career transfer fees now stand at £194.89m – the fourth-highest in history, according to Transfermarkt.

The rest of the top 10

10. Philippe Coutinho – £155.69m (5 transfers)

Coutinho’s long-range curlers were a Liverpool trademark, and his £116.57m move to Barcelona in 2018 capped his peak. Smaller moves to Bayern, Aston Villa, and now a return to Vasco da Gama round out a career that promised more than it delivered.

9. Matheus Cunha – £165.96m (5 transfers)

A surprise name, Cunha has quietly climbed the ranks. After early spells in Switzerland and Germany, Atletico Madrid took a punt. Wolves followed, and his £62.5m move to Manchester United this summer sealed his place on the list.

8. Matthijs de Ligt – £170.54m (3 transfers)

The 2018 Golden Boy winner led Ajax’s memorable Champions League run before Juventus paid £73.83m. Subsequent moves to Bayern Munich and then Manchester United (for £38.87m) have kept his career totals climbing, even as his form fluctuated.

7. Antoine Griezmann – £177.88m (4 transfers)

Griezmann’s £103.62m move to Barcelona was meant to be a crowning moment. Instead, he bounced back to Atletico Madrid—first on loan, then permanently. Despite his talent, league titles have always eluded him.

6. Alvaro Morata – £179.60m (8 transfers)

The most nomadic player on the list, Morata’s career has seen him bounce between Madrid, Turin, London, and now Turkey with Galatasaray. Few players have commanded such fees without ever fully convincing.

5. Ousmane Dembele – £189.97m (3 transfers)

From Rennes to Dortmund to Barcelona (£116.57m), Dembele was once one of football’s most expensive gambles. Now thriving at PSG, his £43.17m switch in 2023 looks like a bargain, especially after helping them finally lift the Champions League.

4. Joao Felix – £194.89m (5 transfers)

Felix’s journey is a cautionary tale. Five years, five moves, and a fading reputation. At Al-Nassr, he’ll reunite with Ronaldo – a player he was once supposed to emulate, not play alongside in a league far from Europe’s elite.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo – £213.28m (5 transfers)

Still the benchmark. From Sporting to Manchester United (£16.4m), then Real Madrid (£81.17m), Juventus (£101.03m), and back to United before joining Al-Nassr on a free. While Messi moved for nothing, Ronaldo consistently commanded massive fees.

2. Romelu Lukaku – £318.82m (9 transfers)

Lukaku’s journey is unmatched in volume. From Chelsea to Everton, United, Inter, back to Chelsea, and now Napoli after loan spells at Roma and Inter. Despite only two major league titles, he’s always been in demand.

1. Neymar Jr – £345.39m (3 transfers)

Efficiency over volume. Just three moves have seen Neymar top the list: from Santos to Barcelona (£75.99m), then shattering records with his £198m PSG switch. Now at Al-Hilal, the Brazilian remains the king of headline-grabbing transfers.

The Takeaway

Joao Felix’s place among this elite group might seem out of place now, but it reflects the huge expectations placed on his shoulders early on. Whether he can rediscover his spark in Saudi Arabia remains to be seen – but for now, his name is etched among football’s most expensive.
