Jaylen Brown Admits He Threw His Phone After Celtics Trade to 76ers

August 9, 2026 at 12:59 pm

Jaylen Brown is still digesting Boston’s decision to trade him, but Philadelphia 76ers’ loaded roster has quickly turned an emotional exit into a full-blown championship chase.

Brown’s First Reaction Said Plenty

Jaylen Brown spent a decade with the Boston Celtics, won an NBA championship and collected Finals MVP honors along the way. So when Boston finally dealt him to the Philadelphia 76ers, his reaction was hardly understated.

“When I first got traded, I just threw my phone across the room,” Brown said during his introductory press conference in Philadelphia.

Tyrese Maxey was among the first new teammates to contact him, offering a welcome while Brown was still trying to process what had happened.

The trade sent Brown to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round selections. Brown had not requested a move, despite Boston shopping him during the offseason and previously including him in failed talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Brown has made little attempt to pretend the departure was easy.

“I’m still processing to some degree,” he said, describing the strange combination of excitement over joining a new city and leaving the only NBA organization he had known.

Philadelphia Has Gone From Interesting to Loaded

Brown would have been a major addition on his own. Philadelphia then went several steps further.

The 76ers now have Brown alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and LeBron James, with VJ Edgecombe also part of a starting group packed with scoring and star power.

That leaves Brown entering a very different situation from the one he carried in Boston last season.

With Jayson Tatum limited to only 16 regular-season games, Brown averaged career highs of 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists. He finished sixth in MVP voting and earned second-team All-NBA honors.

Now the question is less about whether Brown can handle a larger offensive role and more about how many touches everyone is willing to surrender.

There is only one basketball, after all.

Brown has already indicated that winning will have to come before individual numbers, an obvious requirement on a roster featuring this many established scorers.

Sportsbooks Are Buying the Sixers Hype

The betting market has reacted aggressively to Philadelphia’s offseason.

The Brown trade initially chopped the Sixers’ NBA championship price from 60-1 to 22-1 at DraftKings. LeBron’s later arrival sent Philadelphia much further up the board.

Current ESPN futures list Philadelphia at +900 to win the 2026-27 NBA championship, level with the defending champion New York Knicks and trailing only San Antonio and Oklahoma City at +270.

For the average bettor, +900 represents an implied probability of roughly 10% before accounting for the sportsbook margin.

That price also tells a pretty clear story. Sportsbooks are treating Philadelphia as a legitimate contender rather than an offseason curiosity, but there is still a sizable gap between the Sixers and the two teams sitting atop the market.

Brown Has Already Been Through the Pressure Cooker

Philadelphia will not exactly offer Brown a quiet fresh start.

Expectations around this roster will be brutal, especially with Embiid and James alongside him and the franchise still chasing its first NBA championship since 1983. Yet Brown has plenty of experience playing with that sort of pressure.

He was named Eastern Conference Finals MVP and Finals MVP during Boston’s 2024 championship run. He also played 142 postseason games during his Celtics career, giving Philadelphia another player who has already delivered deep into the playoffs.

Brown’s relationship with former running mate Jayson Tatum will remain a talking point too. He said the pair had “not really” spoken since the trade but described winning a championship together as creating a lasting bond despite the ups and downs of their relationship.

For now, Brown seems more interested in what comes next.

The phone may have gone flying when Boston made the trade, but Philadelphia has given him a pretty compelling reason to pick it back up.
