Tacko Fall Gives Bettors a New Reason to Watch the Sixers’ Training Camp

September 3, 2026 at 7:20 am

Philadelphia’s decision to bring 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall into camp will not move NBA title odds overnight, but it could create a few interesting betting wrinkles if he earns a roster spot.

Philadelphia Adds Size at the Margins

The Philadelphia 76ers have added Tacko Fall, Jameer Nelson Jr. and Saint Thomas on Exhibit 10 contracts ahead of training camp, giving all three players a chance to compete for a place in the organization.

Fall is easily the eye-catcher.

At 7-foot-6, he offers Philadelphia a type of backup-center option few teams can replicate. His most recent NBA action came with Cleveland during the 2021-22 season, although he has remained active overseas since leaving the league. Last season with the Ningbo Rockets in China, Fall averaged 11.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks while playing only 18 minutes per game.

Those numbers do not make him an NBA rotation lock. They do make his training-camp audition more interesting than the usual end-of-roster transaction.

The Betting Angle Starts With Embiid

For bettors, Fall’s presence matters mainly because of Joel Embiid.

Philadelphia has spent years dealing with the delicate calculation of how often to use its franchise center, particularly across long regular-season stretches. Fall is unlikely to suddenly become Embiid’s primary backup, but even a limited role could give Philadelphia another option on nights when the coaching staff wants extra size without leaning heavily on its star.

That could eventually filter into player props.

If Fall makes the roster and receives minutes when Embiid sits, rebounds and blocks would be the obvious markets to monitor. A player standing 7-foot-6 does not need a 30-minute workload to affect those categories.

There is also a less obvious angle. Extra depth behind Embiid could change how bettors approach Philadelphia on the second night of back-to-backs, during heavy schedule stretches or whenever the Sixers manage veteran minutes.

The useful information may not be Fall’s own stat line. It may be what his presence tells bettors about Philadelphia’s lineup plans.

Do Not Bet the Tacko Hype Just Yet

There is one rather large catch: Fall has not made the regular-season team.

Exhibit 10 deals are training-camp contracts rather than guaranteed NBA roster spots. Philadelphia has room for competition around its final two-way slot, meaning Fall, Nelson and Thomas are effectively auditioning rather than arriving as fixed members of the rotation.

That distinction matters for anyone tempted to build a betting theory around the move.

Sportsbooks are not going to dramatically reprice Philadelphia because the Sixers invited an enormous center to camp. Nor should they.

Fall has appeared in only 37 NBA regular-season games across previous spells with Boston and Cleveland. His career has been built more around specialized minutes than sustained rotation duty.

The better approach is to treat him as a player worth tracking during preseason rather than a reason to immediately touch Philadelphia’s futures price.

A Potential Matchup Piece in a League Getting Taller

There is another reason the experiment makes sense.

The NBA is increasingly filled with teams capable of putting unusual size on the floor. Victor Wembanyama is the most obvious example, and Fall’s arrival has already triggered some tongue-in-cheek talk about Philadelphia finding a possible answer for the Spurs star.

Calling Fall a “Wemby stopper” would be doing quite a bit of work.

Still, matchup-specific players can have betting value even without large season averages. If Philadelphia keeps Fall specifically for certain opponents, his usage could jump sharply in isolated games.

That is where niche props can become more interesting than season-long futures.

A bettor looking only at Fall’s average minutes might miss the nights when Philadelphia has a clear reason to deploy him.

Nelson And Thomas Give Philadelphia Other Options

Fall is not the only player trying to stick.

Nelson Jr., the son of former NBA All-Star and current Sixers executive Jameer Nelson, averaged 18.9 points and 3.4 assists for the Stockton Kings in the G League last season. Thomas already knows the organization after playing for Philadelphia’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, where he averaged 12.5 points per game.

Both could influence the final shape of Philadelphia’s bench.

That matters because preseason betting is often less about the stars and more about figuring out which fringe players will actually be allowed to play 25 minutes.

James, Embiid and the established veterans will attract the headlines. Bettors paying attention to September and October may find more useful information lower down the depth chart.

Training Camp Could Reveal More Than the Futures Board

Philadelphia enters the season with championship expectations following the arrival of LeBron James, but its latest moves are about filling the less glamorous spaces around the headline names.

Fall will naturally attract attention because it is difficult for a 7-foot-6 player to blend into the background.

For bettors, though, the interesting part is not the spectacle.

It is whether Philadelphia views him as an actual insurance policy behind Embiid, a situational defender for oversized opponents or simply a camp body headed toward the G League.

If he earns a real role, sportsbooks will eventually adjust.

The better opportunity may come before they do.
