Jeff Bezos Set to Join Liverpool Ownership in Blockbuster Minority Stake Deal

August 12, 2026 at 3:31 am

Liverpool could soon welcome one of the world’s richest businessmen into its ownership group, with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos involved in a consortium closing in on a major minority investment in the Premier League club.

The investor group is seeking a stake of around one-third in Liverpool, with the transaction potentially valuing the club at approximately £4.4 billion, or close to $6 billion. Fenway Sports Group, which has controlled Liverpool since 2010, would remain the majority owner under the proposed structure.

The consortium is headed by businessman Amit Bhatia, the former Queens Park Rangers shareholder and son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Bezos is joined by Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, creating an investor group with extraordinary financial resources behind it.

An agreement could be announced within days, although the final timetable has not yet been confirmed. FSG acknowledged last month that Bhatia’s consortium had expressed an interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool.

Liverpool’s Value Continues to Soar

The figures involved demonstrate just how dramatically Liverpool’s value has risen under FSG.

The American sports group acquired the club for around £300 million in 2010. A transaction based on a valuation approaching £4.4 billion would represent an extraordinary increase over the following 16 years.

FSG has previously been open to bringing outside capital into Liverpool without giving up control. Dynasty Equity acquired a small minority interest in the club in 2023, in a deal that valued Liverpool at more than $4.5 billion.

The latest proposal would be on a completely different scale, potentially placing more than 30% of the club in the hands of the new investment group.

Bezos Makes Move Into Football

For Jeff Bezos, the investment would represent a significant entrance into elite football ownership.

The Amazon founder has built a fortune estimated at more than $280 billion, while Eduardo Saverin is worth more than $30 billion. Their involvement would immediately make Liverpool’s ownership structure one of the most financially powerful in world football.

The deal arrives during a period of major change at Anfield. Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League last season following heavy spending on the squad, with Andoni Iraola subsequently replacing Arne Slot as head coach. Mohamed Salah has also left the club, while Michael Edwards departed his role as FSG’s chief executive of football in July.

Liverpool remain one of the biggest sporting brands in the world, having won a joint-record 20 English league titles and six European Cups.

While FSG is expected to retain control for now, the size and financial strength of the incoming consortium will inevitably raise questions over whether the minority investment could eventually develop into something considerably bigger.
