Chelsea have wrapped up a £30 million deal for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, with the 22-year-old signing a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge after his release clause was triggered last week.
Delap becomes Enzo Maresca’s second arrival of the summer, joining midfielder Dario Essugo as the Blues aim to bolster their squad ahead of a busy season that includes a Champions League return and the newly expanded Club World Cup.
After impressing in his debut Premier League season—scoring 12 goals in 37 appearances for a struggling Ipswich side—Delap drew attention from several top-flight clubs including Manchester United, Newcastle, and Everton. Chelsea moved quickly, taking advantage of Ipswich’s relegation-triggered release clause to seal the transfer.
Man City Profit from Sell-On Clause
Manchester City, who sold Delap to Ipswich for £20 million last summer, will pocket 30% of the fee due to a sell-on clause. The striker even scored against Chelsea in a 2-0 Ipswich win back in December, likely cementing his place on the club’s radar.
Maresca, eyeing more firepower up front, reportedly held direct talks with Delap before the move was finalized. The striker is expected to challenge Nicolas Jackson, who managed 10 league goals last season, for a starting role.
Chelsea may not be done dealing with Ipswich either. Talks are ongoing over a potential loan move for young striker Marc Guiu, who made 14 appearances last season, to head in the opposite direction.
