UEFA Partners with FIFPRO for Player Representation and Renews Anti-Piracy Efforts with Friend MTS

FIFPRO Gains Historic Seat on UEFA’s Executive Committee

In a landmark move for European football governance, UEFA has officially partnered with FIFPRO, the global players’ union, granting FIFPRO an advisory position on UEFA’s Executive Committee starting May next year. This decision marks the first time players will have formal representation within UEFA’s leadership, a shift designed to give athletes a direct role in shaping policies that affect their professional lives.

“Players are at the heart of football, and their perspectives must shape the decisions taken,” UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin commented. “By bringing FIFPRO into our governance structure, we’re not only honoring their input but also creating a more inclusive future for the game—one in which player welfare is a guiding priority.”

FIFPRO will participate in discussions over decisions directly impacting player workload, employment conditions, and health—a crucial development as many top players have voiced concerns over increasingly congested match schedules. European competitions have seen expanded fixture lists, and with FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup on the horizon, the pressure on athletes continues to mount. Several prominent players have even hinted at the possibility of strike action to address what they feel is an unsustainable workload.

The involvement of FIFPRO, which represents players in over 60 countries, ensures that their voices are not only heard but embedded in UEFA’s top-level decision-making. David Terrier, President of FIFPRO Europe, hailed the agreement as “a monumental step forward for players across Europe.” He continued, “Having a direct line to UEFA’s Executive Committee gives players a powerful platform to advocate for the well-being and fairness they deserve, where it counts most.”

UEFA Extends Anti-Piracy Efforts with Friend MTS Partnership

Complementing its focus on player welfare, UEFA has also renewed its partnership with Friend MTS to bolster anti-piracy protections across its premier competitions, including the Champions League, Women’s Champions League, and Nations League. Through this alliance, UEFA aims to maintain the integrity and financial health of the sport by combating illegal streaming and protecting broadcast revenues, which fund both professional and grassroots initiatives across Europe.

The agreement with Friend MTS brings a suite of advanced anti-piracy solutions, from global content monitoring and enforcement to server blocking and payment disruption for illegal IPTV services. Friend MTS will also work to remove unauthorized applications from app stores and delist infringing links from search engines. These measures ensure that UEFA’s media rights are defended across multiple platforms and that legal broadcasters and fans are protected from illegal streaming sources.

Shane McCarthy, CEO of Friend MTS, praised UEFA’s proactive approach to content protection, remarking, “UEFA has consistently led the charge against online piracy, as demonstrated by the success of our collaboration during UEFA EURO 2024. Our renewed partnership will keep UEFA one step ahead, deploying state-of-the-art anti-piracy tools to preserve the integrity of European football.”

The Road Ahead: Ensuring Fairness On and Off the Field

These two partnerships underscore UEFA’s dual commitment to supporting both the welfare of players and the integrity of its competitions. With FIFPRO on board, UEFA has set a precedent for integrating player perspectives into its governance framework, addressing concerns about player burnout and workload. This initiative also promotes a long-term vision in which players’ health and rights remain central to football’s evolution.

Meanwhile, UEFA’s investment in advanced anti-piracy technology highlights its dedication to protecting the economic foundation of the sport. By safeguarding broadcasting revenue, UEFA can continue to channel funds into essential infrastructure, grassroots programs, and competitive development for players at all levels.

The collaboration with FIFPRO and the strengthened partnership with Friend MTS signify UEFA’s commitment to balancing the business and personal sides of football, ensuring the sport remains sustainable, accessible, and fair for everyone involved—from fans and broadcasters to the players themselves.
