United Land Brazilian Forward After Dismal Campaign
Manchester United have wrapped up the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62.5 million move, marking the first major signing under new boss Ruben Amorim.
The 25-year-old Brazilian completed his medical last week and signed a five-year deal. He arrives after a standout season at Molineux, where he scored 15 goals and added six assists in the Premier League—more than any United player managed in the same campaign.
Amorim’s First Step in Rebuilding the Attack
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag following United’s worst league finish since 1974, has been keen to revamp his front line. With Rasmus Hojlund struggling, and the futures of Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho uncertain, Cunha becomes the first piece in a reshaped attack.
Cunha’s arrival signals a clear shift in strategy. Despite signing a four-year extension with Wolves in February, he made no secret of his ambition to move on.
“I want to fight for titles,” Cunha said back in March. “I have potential and it’s time to take the next step.”
United Beat Competition and Stagger Payment
United will pay the fee in three instalments of £20.85 million across two years, after Wolves rejected a longer payment plan. The move brings Cunha’s time in the Midlands to an end after 33 goals in 92 appearances, following his initial loan from Atletico Madrid in early 2023.
He was seen leaving the Lowry Hotel in Manchester alongside his pregnant wife just hours before the deal was announced. There’s speculation he could inherit United’s No.10 shirt, currently worn by Rashford.
More Moves Ahead – But Budget Is Tight
United are targeting further signings, including another striker, a midfielder, and a creative playmaker. Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Ipswich starlet Liam Delap are among those linked, though Delap appears Chelsea-bound.
With a modest transfer budget of around £125 million plus player sales, United are open to offers for much of their squad. Tyrell Malacia is among those expected to be sold, while Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans will leave as free agents.
Farewell from Wolves
Cunha signed off with a heartfelt message to Wolves fans after playing the full 90 minutes in their final game—a 1-1 draw with Brentford.
“I became the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season,” he wrote. “All I ever wanted was to do the impossible for Wolves.”
He also gifted Rolex watches to teammates Joao Gomes and Andre as parting gestures.
United finished the season in 15th, one spot ahead of Wolves, despite beating Aston Villa on the final day. With Cunha now on board, Amorim will be hoping to lead a much sharper side into the new campaign.
