Man United’s Summer Overhaul: Mbeumo on Radar as Solskjaer Slams McTominay Exit

United Line Up Brentford’s Mbeumo as Part of Summer Rebuild

Manchester United are preparing for another summer of squad reshuffling, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo emerging as a key target. The 24-year-old forward is valued at £60 million, according to The Telegraph, and has drawn interest following a standout season in West London.

Mbeumo, who has scored 18 goals and registered seven assists, has been instrumental in Brentford’s push for European qualification. He remains on United’s shortlist alongside Matheus Cunha, Ipswich’s Liam Delap, and Lille striker Jonathan David. With Patrick Dorgu already signed from Lecce in January, United are now focused on bolstering their attack—though any moves depend heavily on outgoings.

The club must navigate Financial Fair Play limits. Selling academy products like Alejandro Garnacho or Kobbie Mainoo would bring in pure profit, while moving Marcus Rashford’s £315,000-a-week wages off the books would ease financial pressure. For now, the club is keeping options open, but adding a striker is a clear priority.

Mbeumo’s versatility—able to play wide, centrally, or even as a wing-back—adds to his appeal. Newcastle are also keeping tabs, and Brentford boss Thomas Frank has admitted that a sale could happen for the right price.

“If the price is right – and that’s going to be expensive – then I’m sure the club will be open to it,” Frank said. “We are a selling club, but only to a point.”

Solskjaer Weighs In as Rebuild Continues

As United weigh up their next moves, former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has questioned some of the club’s recent decisions—particularly the sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli.

McTominay, who played 255 games for United, has enjoyed a strong season in Italy, scoring 12 goals under Antonio Conte. Speaking to BBC Sport, Solskjaer said the midfielder’s departure made little sense to him.

“How you can sell Scott is beyond me.”

During his tenure, Solskjaer relied on McTominay and Fred as his midfield engine room—though both players struggled to win over large sections of the fanbase. Fred has since joined Fenerbahce, where he plays under Jose Mourinho. Ironically, Solskjaer’s Besiktas side will face Fenerbahce this weekend in the Turkish Super Lig.

Solskjaer also revealed that only three United players—Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelöf—have contacted him since his 2021 exit, though he praised Fernandes’ leadership and Maguire’s character.

“Harry has always been a leader and a fighter,” he said. “There is another captain there in Bruno. Both of them are top human beings.”

United’s summer plans appear shaped by more than just transfer targets—they reflect the lingering impact of past decisions, and voices like Solskjaer’s are a reminder of how those choices continue to be debated.
