Gary Neville: £74m Sesko “Nowhere Near Up to Speed” After Fulham Draw

Gary Neville has cast doubt over Benjamin Sesko’s readiness following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday. Speaking on his podcast, the former United captain said the £74m summer signing from RB Leipzig is still well short of match fitness.

United invested heavily in their attack this summer, spending over £200m to bring in Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo. But Sesko, 22, has so far been limited to late substitute appearances, coming off the bench against both Arsenal and Fulham.

Neville’s Concerns

Neville admitted he was among those eager to see Sesko start but warned the forward isn’t yet ready.

“Sesko at the moment – let’s just say it, he is nowhere near in terms of fitness or getting up to speed,” Neville said.

He urged Ruben Amorim to hand the striker a full 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup clash with Grimsby, suggesting that game could prepare him for a first Premier League start against Burnley.

Neville also questioned Amorim’s changes against Fulham, particularly the decision to alter the back line late on.

“The strange one for me was the change of the back line with Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw going off with five minutes to go. You don’t want to be changing that back line if you can help it.”

Betting Implications

Sesko’s lack of sharpness creates uncertainty in goalscorer markets. Punters who backed the Slovenian as United’s breakout forward this season may have to be patient. Until he proves ready to start, Cunha and Bmeumo look the safer bets in anytime scorer or first goalscorer markets.

Amorim’s substitutions also carry weight for in-play betting. Neville’s observation that United weakened after their changes is a reminder that live odds could swing against United once the manager rotates his side. Bettors watching second-half markets should keep an eye on how quickly Amorim turns to his bench.

The winless start is another factor to weigh in match result betting. United were favourites against Fulham but failed to deliver, leaving backers frustrated. Their trip to Grimsby in midweek should bring a confidence boost, but the key test is at Old Trafford against Burnley. If Sesko earns his first start, markets around him scoring could tempt bettors — though Neville’s comments highlight the risk of expecting too much too soon.

Looking Ahead

United’s attack is under the microscope, and so are the betting lines around it. Whether Sesko settles quickly or continues to play catch-up will influence where the smart money goes in both Premier League and Carabao Cup fixtures. For now, value may lie away from the big-money signing until he shows he can turn appearances into goals.
