Christian Eriksen is conscious, with Denmark’s team doctor saying the midfielder is in good spirits after another frightening collapse during international duty.
Eriksen Collapses in Odense Friendly
Christian Eriksen is recovering after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine at Nature Energy Park in Odense on Sunday.
The 34-year-old midfielder went down in the 65th minute after appearing to clutch his chest, prompting immediate concern from players, staff, and supporters. Medical teams rushed onto the pitch, while Denmark and Ukraine players formed a protective ring around him as treatment began.
The match was later abandoned, with Denmark leading 2-1. AP reported that the game was officially called off in the 79th minute, with no further play after Eriksen’s collapse.
Doctor Says Pacemaker Responded Properly
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen gave the most reassuring update after the incident, saying Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness quickly.
Boesen said Eriksen walked off the pitch himself and that, in his view, the pacemaker responded as it should. The midfielder was taken to hospital for further checks to determine what caused the episode.
A Monday update brought better news. Boesen said he had spoken with Eriksen, who was with family, in good spirits, and likely to be discharged soon.
Painful Echoes of Euro 2020
The incident carried obvious emotional weight because of Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland in June 2021.
On that occasion, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest, received CPR on the pitch, and was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. He made a remarkable return to football, later playing for Brentford, Manchester United, and Wolfsburg.
That history made Sunday’s scenes hard to watch, even though the medical update was far more encouraging this time. Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg praised how quickly everyone reacted and said the main thing was that Eriksen was doing well.
Football Takes a Back Seat
Denmark coach Brian Riemer said the priority was Eriksen’s condition and the need for players and staff to support each other after another traumatic night for the national team.
For fans and bettors, there is not much to dress up here. Markets, scorelines, and friendly-match form all become background noise when a player collapses. The only result that mattered by Monday morning was that Eriksen was conscious, surrounded by family, and expected to return home soon.
