Alexander Isak netted his first goal for Liverpool as the Reds edged past Southampton 2-1 in the Carabao Cup third round at Anfield on Wednesday evening.
A Record Signing Off the Mark
The £125million British-record signing was handed a start by head coach Arne Slot as he continues to build up match fitness after a turbulent summer at Newcastle. It was only his second start for Liverpool following last week’s 58-minute outing against Atletico Madrid.
Isak came close to scoring inside the opening minute when Alex McCarthy denied him from close range, but he didn’t have to wait long. On the stroke of half-time, Federico Chiesa pounced on a misplaced pass from the Saints goalkeeper and squared the ball for Isak to finish calmly from a few yards out. The Swede celebrated with his trademark gesture as Anfield erupted.
Managed Minutes
That goal proved to be one of Isak’s final touches, with Slot replacing him at half-time with Hugo Ekitike as part of a carefully managed fitness plan. The Dutchman confirmed afterwards that Isak will be eased in gradually and should be at full sharpness after the October international break.
“He’s available for next week when we play three games. But the best version of him, that’s after the break when he has minutes under his belt,” Slot explained.
Ekitike’s Eventful Cameo
Liverpool sealed progression thanks to substitute Ekitike, who struck the decisive goal before earning a red card for removing his shirt in celebration. Southampton had threatened a late fightback, but the Reds held firm to book their place in the next round.
Isak’s Verdict
Reflecting on his first Liverpool goal, Isak told Sky Sports:
“It was good to get minutes but the main goal was to win. My priority is to help the team with goals and the game. I feel good—it’s still early, but with each game it’s going to get better.”
What’s Next
The Swedish forward will now look to build momentum during a demanding run of fixtures. Liverpool face trips to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea before the international break, providing Isak with further opportunities to integrate into his new side.
