Cameron Boozer needed only five NBA games to deliver a performance that placed him among the league’s youngest record setters. The Memphis rookie finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists as the Grizzlies beat the Portland Trail Blazers 124 to 103 on October 29.
At 19 years and 103 days, Boozer became the second youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double. Only Josh Giddey achieved the milestone at a younger age.
The result also kept the Memphis Grizzlies unbeaten through their first five games. For a franchise reshaping its roster after trading Ja Morant, the rookie’s contribution offers an encouraging early indication of how its next team could function.
The assists show how much Memphis already trusts him
A triple-double means reaching double figures in three statistical categories during one game. Boozer’s combination covered scoring, rebounding and passing, giving Memphis several different ways to benefit from his time on the floor.
The 12 assists were especially significant for a rookie forward. They showed his ability to help organize possessions and create opportunities for teammates, alongside his own scoring.
Yahoo Sports’ analysis highlighted the variety of those decisions. Boozer found teammates near the basket, moved passes to shooters when defenders crowded him and looked upcourt quickly after securing rebounds. Those actions allow an offense to begin through a forward as well as a guard.
He also finished efficiently, making six of 10 field goal attempts, including four of five from beyond the arc. His production came in approximately 28 minutes, with only two turnovers against those 12 assists.
That shooting matters to his passing role. A defender who must respect Boozer’s jumper has a more difficult choice about how closely to guard him, potentially creating space for a drive or a pass into the paint.
Memphis turns a close game into a collective win
The final margin concealed a competitive first half. The teams were level at 58 to 58 at the break before Memphis outscored Portland 66 to 45 over the remaining two quarters.
Isaiah Stewart matched Boozer’s 18 points from the bench, while Cedric Coward contributed 17. The spread of scoring gave Memphis support around its rookie rather than requiring him to dominate every possession.
That distinction makes the performance more useful when assessing the Grizzlies’ start. Boozer could influence the game through his decisions and rebounding while other players supplied important baskets.
The opponent added another layer to the evening. Ja Morant was facing Memphis for the first time since his offseason move to Portland. The Grizzlies left with a victory built partly around a teenager now taking on substantial responsibility in their offense.
Only Giddey reached the milestone younger
Josh Giddey was 19 years and 84 days old when he recorded his first NBA triple-double for Oklahoma City in January 2022. Boozer reached the same statistical threshold 19 days later in age.
The comparison establishes the historical significance without requiring a prediction about either player’s career. Recording double figures across three categories this early shows how quickly Boozer has become involved in different parts of NBA games.
Memphis selected him third overall in the 2026 NBA Draft after his season at Duke. His opening performances have already given coach Tuomas Iisalo opportunities to use him as both a scorer and a passing option within the same possession.
Sacramento provides the next test
The Grizzlies next face the Sacramento Kings on October 31, with a sixth consecutive victory available. Boozer’s task will again involve reading the defense, protecting possessions and helping teammates find productive opportunities.
After the Portland win, he welcomed the achievement while emphasizing how much of the season remained. He also spoke about continuing to compete and giving Memphis supporters a team to enjoy following.
His first triple-double has supplied an early highlight. The immediate value for Memphis is the range of responsibilities he is already handling as the team prepares for its next opponent.
