Barcelona will visit Paris Saint-Germain without Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde after confirming injuries to both defenders on October 18. The setbacks leave Hansi Flick with fewer defensive options for a week that also includes a home meeting with Real Madrid.
Garcia faces an estimated three to four weeks out with a right thigh injury, putting him out of both matches. Kounde has a sprained left ankle and will miss Tuesday’s Champions League game, although his availability for El Clasico on October 25 remains undecided.
The diagnoses followed Saturday’s victory at Real Betis. Barcelona left with another three points, but Sunday’s medical update gave Flick a more complicated selection problem ahead of two important fixtures.
A Successful Night at Betis Comes at a Cost
Eric Garcia entered the Betis game at halftime to replace Gerard Martin and scored Barcelona’s fourth goal in a victory by 5 to 2. His contribution helped secure the result, but he was unable to complete the match.
The defender departed with around 10 minutes remaining, leaving Barcelona to finish with 10 players. Jules Kounde started the match and experienced discomfort after the final whistle, according to the club.
The injury confirmation changes the immediate picture after a strong domestic performance. Barcelona has won its opening nine league matches, but maintaining that momentum now requires adjustments to a defense that has lost two options at once.
Martin’s Fitness Adds Another Selection Question
There is also uncertainty surrounding Gerard Martin. Mundo Deportivo reported that the defender has inflammation in his foot and was expected to travel to Paris, with his availability depending on how the problem developed over the following 48 hours.
That remains a reported assessment, separate from Barcelona’s official announcement about Garcia and Kounde. Traveling with the squad would not, by itself, establish that Martin is ready to start or complete a full match.
For Hansi Flick, the practical concern is flexibility. Fewer available defenders can restrict changes during a match and make it harder to share minutes across the week. Martin’s fitness therefore matters beyond the question of who appears in Tuesday’s starting lineup.
Barcelona has confirmed the absences, but the final defensive arrangement remains a selection decision. The next squad announcement should provide a clearer picture of the options available in Paris.
PSG Also Faces a Defensive Absence
Paris Saint-Germain has its own injury problem before the October 20 meeting. Left back Nuno Mendes is expected to miss several weeks after suffering a thigh injury against Strasbourg on Saturday, with the French club confirming the setback on Sunday.
Both clubs have collected six points from their opening two Champions League matches. Tuesday offers an opportunity to build on those starts, although both sides will have to prepare without established defensive personnel.
Kounde’s Recovery Matters for the Madrid Meeting
The domestic stakes are substantial too. Real Madrid beat Sevilla by 4 to 1 on Sunday, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice, to move within six points of Barcelona before their meeting next weekend.
A Barcelona victory would extend that gap to nine points. A Madrid win would reduce it to three, making the match an early opportunity to change the direction of the title race.
Kounde’s recovery is therefore an important issue for the days after Paris. Barcelona has left his Clasico availability open, while Garcia’s estimated recovery period extends beyond the fixture. Flick must first prepare a defense for PSG, then assess whether Kounde can return for Madrid five days later.
