Kobbie Mainoo’s late strike settled a wild 3-2 win at Old Trafford, sealing Manchester United’s Champions League place after Liverpool had dragged themselves back from two goals down.
United Start Like They Mean It
Manchester United did not so much ease into this one as kick the door off its hinges.
Inside six minutes, Matheus Cunha had Old Trafford rocking. Liverpool made a mess of clearing a corner, Cunha saw his first effort blocked, then his second took a deflection off Alexis Mac Allister and spun beyond Freddie Woodman.
Eight minutes later, United had another. Benjamin Sesko was denied at first by Woodman, but the move stayed alive. Luke Shaw clipped the ball back in, Bruno Fernandes nodded it across goal, and Sesko forced it over the line.
VAR took a long look for handball, because apparently no goal in modern football is allowed to be enjoyed in real time. The check came and went. United led 2-0.
For punters who backed United to start fast, this was dreamland. For anyone holding a Liverpool ticket, it was already looking like a long afternoon.
Liverpool Get a Lifeline from Nowhere
Liverpool had plenty of the ball in the first half but did very little with it. Their passing was tidy enough, yet there was no snap, no pace, and not much threat.
United were happier without the ball. Michael Carrick’s side sat in, waited, then broke forward with speed whenever Liverpool coughed it up.
Bruno Fernandes should have made it 3-0 around the half-hour mark, drilling wide from 12 yards when the finish needed more care. At the time, it felt like a missed chance. Later, it looked like the opening Liverpool needed.
The visitors were handed their route back early in the second half. Amad Diallo, on at the break, gave the ball away cheaply. Dominik Szoboszlai surged forward, turned past Harry Maguire too easily, and pulled a left-footed finish beyond Senne Lammens.
Suddenly, Liverpool had hope. United had given it to them gift-wrapped.
Lammens Error Turns the Match
United’s nerves truly kicked in soon after.
In the 56th minute, Lammens tried to play short from a goal kick and passed straight into danger. Mac Allister pounced, Szoboszlai stayed calm, and Cody Gakpo was left to roll the ball into an empty net.
From 2-0 down, Liverpool were level. From complete control, United were wobbling.
For live bettors, the market must have flipped hard. United had looked in charge, then one sloppy pass after another turned the match into a coin toss.
Liverpool were the better side for a spell after that. Maguire produced a vital block to deny Gakpo, and Lammens had to scramble a loose ball off his line after a set-piece melee.
Mainoo Delivers the Final Word
A draw would not have been a disaster for either side. In this fixture, avoiding defeat usually buys a manager at least a few hours of peace.
But this United team under Carrick has developed a habit of finding another gear.
With 13 minutes left, Shaw’s cross was cleared only as far as Mainoo on the edge of the box. The midfielder met it sweetly, driving a low finish into the corner to put United back in front.
It was a clean, ruthless strike, and it felt right for the match. Liverpool had been dragged back into it by United mistakes. Mainoo made sure United won it through quality.
Carrick’s Run Keeps Rolling
This was Carrick’s 10th win in 14 games, and it came with the added spice of hurting Liverpool at Old Trafford.
United are still not perfect. They remain capable of inviting chaos, as the second half proved rather loudly. But they now have pace, belief, and enough match-winners to tilt tight games their way.
Liverpool, meanwhile, looked short of ideas for long stretches. Without Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike, they lacked punch. Their comeback was entertaining, but it owed more to United’s errors than Liverpool’s invention.
Arne Slot’s side have now suffered 11 league defeats. That is uncomfortable company when Sunderland and Leeds have only one more each.
Both clubs are likely to be in next season’s Champions League. United will arrive feeling reborn. Liverpool may arrive wondering how a match that briefly looked salvageable ended with Mainoo twisting the knife.
