Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back following Liverpool’s latest defeat — a 2-1 loss at Anfield to bitter rivals Manchester United — their fourth straight in all competitions. The former Reds defender took aim at the club’s blockbuster summer spending and questioned why the biggest signings are warming the bench.
“This wasn’t a Liverpool summer. It was a Real Madrid summer,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “Big names, big money… no plan.”
He pointed to the massive outlay — over £400 million — on new players like Alexander Isak (£125m), Florian Wirtz (£116m), and Hugo Ekitike (£79m), many of whom have yet to cement a place in the starting XI. For Carragher, that’s a failure in both recruitment and management.
Carragher Questions Isak Deal, Backs Ekitike
Of all the high-profile names, Carragher singled out Isak as a questionable fit.
“I wasn’t a fan of bringing Isak in,” he admitted. “It’s not great for him when Ekitike, arguably Liverpool’s best signing, is just sitting on the bench. That pressure builds — he knows if he doesn’t deliver fast, he’s getting hooked.”
The former England defender argued that Slot must find a way to pair Ekitike and Isak up front — not just to justify the investment, but to give the team a much-needed identity.
A Lineup Fix from Carragher
Carragher pitched his own solution:
- Wirtz on the left, tucking in
- Ekitike just behind Isak
- Push fullback Milos Kerkez higher up the pitch
“The game now is about getting your front five firing,” he explained. “Carlo Ancelotti mastered that at Madrid. If you’ve spent big, you can’t afford to keep those players in the dugout.”
He admitted Slot is in a tough spot but stressed that finding balance is no longer optional.
The Average Fan’s Frustration
For the everyday Liverpool supporter — or the online casino player who likes to throw down a weekend bet on their team — the club’s current form is more than a bad run. It’s a source of pure frustration. Big-money names were supposed to lift the Reds to another level, not turn them into a lineup guessing game.
“Fans are losing sleep,” Carragher said. “This squad should be delivering. Right now, it’s chaos.”
Liverpool’s Summer Signings:
- Alexander Isak (Newcastle, £125m)
- Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen, £116m)
- Hugo Ekitike (Eintracht Frankfurt, £79m)
- Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth, £40m)
- Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen, £29.5m)
- Giorgi Mamardashvili (Valencia, £29m)
- Giovanni Leoni (Parma, £26m)
- Armin Pecsi (Puskas Akademia, fee undisclosed)
- Freddie Woodman (Preston, free)
With fans growing restless and results slipping fast, Carragher’s warning is clear: if Liverpool don’t fix the balance and play their star signings, this could be a long and painful season.
