Alejandro Garnacho’s Chelsea debut ended in frustration after Jamie Redknapp pinned Brentford’s stoppage-time equaliser on the £40million winger, calling out his lapse in concentration during Sky Sports’ post-match coverage.
The Argentine, a second-half substitute, was caught out defensively as Brentford snatched a 2-2 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium. Chelsea looked set to climb to the top of the Premier League after Moises Caicedo blasted them ahead in the 85th minute, but Fabio Carvalho struck late to salvage a point for the hosts.
Garnacho, who joined the Blues from Manchester United this summer after falling out with new manager Ruben Amorim, was tasked with marking Carvalho at the back post as Brentford prepared a long throw deep into added time. He lost track of his man, and Carvalho punished the lapse with a close-range finish.
Redknapp: “That’s your job – don’t lose him”
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp didn’t mince words.
“Garnacho has got a job to do. He’s got to mark Carvalho. That’s your job — simple as that. Don’t lose him,” Redknapp said. “You’re now one of the defensive players in there. If he gets in behind you, it’s on you.”
Redknapp broke down the sequence in detail, pointing out Brentford’s tactical subs and the unexpected threat from Kevin Schade’s throw-in.
“He launches one into the box… Garnacho’s not concentrating, and there he (Carvalho) is at the back post. He just falls asleep at the vital moment.”
Mixed debut for Garnacho
Garnacho had shown promise in attack after coming off the bench alongside Cole Palmer, who also made an impact with Chelsea’s first goal. Palmer, returning from injury, finished smartly after latching onto Joao Pedro’s header.
Despite the attacking spark, Garnacho’s defensive mistake proved costly. It was a harsh lesson for the 21-year-old, who’s looking to win over Enzo Maresca with stiff competition on the flanks from Jamie Gittens, Estevao Williams, and Pedro Neto.
The former United man signed a seven-year deal with Chelsea on August 30, becoming the club’s most expensive academy sale after surpassing David Beckham’s £24.5m move to Real Madrid in 2003.
Chelsea still unbeaten
The result leaves Chelsea fifth in the table with two wins and two draws from their opening four matches. While Maresca’s side remain unbeaten, the dropped points at Brentford will sting — especially after coming so close to claiming top spot.
For Garnacho, it’s an early reminder that one moment of inattention can undo an entire performance.
