Australia Clinches Third Straight FIBA Asia Cup in Thrilling Win Over China

Boomers Extend Unbeaten Run to 18 Games

Australia pulled off a nail-biting 90-89 victory over China in Jeddah on Sunday night, securing their third consecutive FIBA Asia Cup title. The Boomers, who have never lost in the tournament since joining in 2017, now stand at a perfect 18-0 record.

Xavier Cooks delivered a masterclass performance with 30 points on 13-of-17 shooting, adding nine rebounds to claim Final MVP honors. Jaylin Galloway, named Tournament MVP, drained six triples en route to 23 points and earned a spot on the All-Star Five alongside Jack McVeigh. William Hickey proved decisive in crunch time, chipping in 15 points and sealing the win with clutch buckets in the closing minute.

Hu Mingxuan led China’s charge with 26 points, while Hu Jinqiu posted a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double. China briefly held a 15-point lead in the first half, but Australia’s second-half surge set the stage for a dramatic finale. With one second left, Mingxuan’s three-point attempt for the win rattled off the rim, handing the Boomers the crown once again.

Historical Context

The win makes Australia only the second nation to record a three-peat in Asia Cup history, joining China, who last managed the feat in 2003. For China, silver still marks progress, as it’s their first medal since taking gold in 2015. Iran completed the podium after defeating New Zealand 79-73 for bronze.

Final Standings

  4. New Zealand

Betting Market Impact

Australia’s dominance confirms their position as the clear betting favorite in Asia for future FIBA competitions. Sportsbooks are likely to shorten odds further on the Boomers in both Asia Cup and Olympic qualifying markets, given their perfect 18-0 record since joining the tournament. China’s resurgence, meanwhile, could spark renewed betting interest. Their run to the final—after a decade without a medal—suggests they may be undervalued by bookmakers heading into the next cycle.

For bettors, the gap between Australia and the rest of the field remains significant, but China’s return to form signals a potential two-horse race in upcoming tournaments. Iran’s bronze also reinforces their reliability as a dark horse contender in Asian basketball betting markets.
