Arsenal Eye Viktor Gyokeres as Sporting President Slams ‘Blackmail’ Tactics

Gunners Prepare Move Amid Turmoil in Lisbon

Arsenal are readying an offer for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, as tensions explode between the player and his club’s president. The forward is reportedly pushing for a summer exit, with Arsenal sensing an opportunity in the fallout.

Frederico Varandas, Sporting’s president, hit out publicly this week, accusing Gyokeres’ representatives of resorting to “threats, blackmail, and insults” in a bid to force through a transfer. He insists no deal was ever struck allowing the striker to leave for less than his €100 million (£84m) release clause, denying reports of a gentleman’s agreement for a reduced fee.

Portuguese outlet A Bola claims the rift has disrupted the striker market, with Arsenal now preparing to make a formal proposal. Gyokeres’ agent is believed to be in London to advance discussions, with the Gunners looking to strengthen their attack ahead of next season.

Arsenal’s Striker Hunt Heats Up

Mikel Arteta is keen to bolster his forward line, and while RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko has been widely reported as their top target, Arsenal appear to be keeping their options open. A previous approach was made for Sesko, but no bid materialized, and his valuation is said to rival the nine-figure sums linked with players like Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

Arsenal are reportedly aiming to strike a deal for Gyokeres in the region of £70 million, a fee that could appeal to Sporting if the relationship with the player continues to deteriorate.

Gyokeres Wipes Sporting from His Social Media

Fueling the speculation, Gyokeres has scrubbed any reference to Sporting, Sweden, or Nike from his Instagram account. He has three years left on his contract but is determined to move on after two standout seasons in Portugal, including a league title and a domestic double this year.

In a fiery statement, Varandas dismissed the idea of selling the Swede for €60m plus €10m in add-ons (£51m+£8.5m), and made it clear that no official offers have arrived: “To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres, neither today nor last season.”

Manchester United Remain in the Picture

Manchester United haven’t given up hope either. The club continues to explore a deal, with Gyokeres still admired by his former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim. United’s financial outlook was dented by their failure to qualify for Europe, but they remain in the conversation—especially with Gyokeres netting 39 goals in 31 league starts last season.

Sporting Stay Quiet Amid Chaos

Sporting manager Rui Borges declined to comment directly, saying only, “Sporting’s future begins on July 1st.” For now, all eyes are on Arsenal and whether they’ll move quickly to take advantage of a chaotic situation in Lisbon.
