Thunder Secure Future with Holmgren and Williams Extensions

July 13, 2025 at 3:36 pm

Fresh off their 2025 NBA championship run, the Oklahoma City Thunder have doubled down on their title-winning core. The team finalized major contract extensions for Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams this week, keeping them alongside MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the long haul.

Holmgren, 23, agreed to a five-year, $250 million fully guaranteed deal after a dominant postseason, where he averaged 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks over 23 games. He set an NBA Finals Game 7 record with five blocks.

Williams, 24, is finalizing a five-year rookie-scale supermax worth up to $287 million. Despite a torn wrist tendon, he turned in an All-Star playoff run with 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. He upped that to 23.6 points per game in the Finals.

Combined with Gilgeous-Alexander’s $285 million supermax, OKC has committed $822 million to its trio through 2030-31—a record-setting show of intent to chase more titles over the next decade.

Financial Hurdles Ahead, But Flexibility Remains

While the extensions lock in the Thunder’s stars, they come with future cap complications. OKC is projected to surpass the second salary-cap apron, bringing potential luxury tax hits and likely roster adjustments. Some role players could become cap casualties down the line.

Still, general manager Sam Presti has built flexibility into the roster. Oklahoma City owns a deep stockpile of draft picks and several non-guaranteed contracts, giving the front office room to maneuver as needed.

Brooks Barnhizer Turning Heads in Summer League

Second-round pick Brooks Barnhizer is making an early case to stick around. Selected 56th overall on June 26, the Northwestern product has exploded defensively in the NBA Summer League, averaging a league-best 6.5 steals per game through two outings.

Barnhizer grabbed seven steals in a 90-81 win over Brooklyn on July 10, then followed it up with six more against Indiana, adding 17 points and five rebounds in a 104-85 win. In total: 13 steals and only three fouls.

While his scoring has fluctuated, Barnhizer averaged 17.1 points per game last season at Northwestern and is clearly settling in. He’s currently on a two-way deal with the Thunder.

Summer League Squad Clicking Early

Oklahoma City’s Summer League group is off to a 2-0 start, with balanced contributions across the board. Against the Nets, Ajay Mitchell (20), Chris Youngblood (19), and Nikola Topic (18) led the way. In the Indiana rematch, Youngblood (21), Barnhizer and Jazian Gortman (17 each), Malevy Leons (16), and Mitchell (13) fueled the blowout win.

The Thunder’s young talent continues to thrive at every level—and with their stars now locked in, the path toward a lasting contender is clear.
