NBA Suspends Three Players After Mavericks-Suns Altercation

Scuffle on the Court Leads to Disciplinary Action

The NBA has handed down suspensions to three players following a heated on-court altercation during Friday night’s game between the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns. The incident, which occurred during the Mavericks’ 98-89 victory at the Footprint Center, escalated quickly and led to multiple ejections and disciplinary measures.

Details of the Suspensions

Mavericks forward Naji Marshall received the harshest penalty, with a four-game suspension without pay. Suns center Jusuf Nurkić was suspended for three games without pay, while Mavericks forward PJ Washington was sidelined for one game without pay. According to NBA Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars, the suspensions were issued for their roles in the altercation, which began on the court but reportedly extended beyond it.

The Incident

Tensions flared in the third quarter when Nurkić committed an offensive foul, sparking a confrontation between him and Marshall. The scuffle intensified when Nurkić swung his arm at Marshall, prompting Marshall to retaliate with a punch. Amid the chaos, Washington shoved Nurkić to the floor as players and officials scrambled to intervene.

All three players were assessed technical fouls and ejected from the game. The conflict, however, didn’t stop there—Marshall allegedly attempted to confront Nurkić further in a corridor near the locker rooms, according to league officials.

Reactions from Coaches

Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer condemned the altercation and criticized Nurkić’s involvement.

“This level of altercation doesn’t help anyone—our team, our players, or the league,” Budenholzer said in a post-game press conference. “I don’t know all the specifics, but it’s disappointing it reached this point.”

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, however, saw the situation differently.

“Emotions run high in games like these, and our guys stood up for one another,” Kidd said. “It’s about protecting your teammates. Now, we’ve got to focus on the next game and move forward.”

Suspensions Begin Immediately

Marshall and Washington will begin serving their suspensions on Saturday when the Mavericks face the Portland Trail Blazers. Nurkić’s suspension also starts Saturday as the Suns take on the Golden State Warriors.

The incident serves as a reminder of the NBA’s strict stance against altercations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professionalism on and off the court.
