Stephen Curry has committed his future to Golden State on a below-max extension, giving the Warriors extra financial flexibility while leaving major questions around Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green and the team’s longer-term title prospects.
Curry Leaves Money on the Table
Stephen Curry is staying with the Golden State Warriors, but the most interesting part of his new contract may be the money he did not take.
The Warriors have agreed to a two-year, $116 million extension with Curry, keeping the four-time NBA champion under contract through the 2028-29 season. Curry was eligible for as much as $136 million, meaning he accepted roughly $20 million less than the maximum available.
The extension follows a 2025-26 season in which Curry remained productive when healthy, averaging 26.6 points and 4.7 assists while shooting 39.3% from three-point range. The problem was availability. A right knee issue limited him to 43 games.
At 38, Curry is no longer just betting on himself. His contract gives Golden State more room to bet on what comes next.
Butler and Green Bring the Bigger Question
Curry’s decision has inevitably shifted attention toward Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green.
Butler is set to earn $56.8 million this season, while Green returned on a one-year deal worth $27.7 million after declining his previous player option. Combined, that puts around $84.5 million in expiring salary on Golden State’s books.
That could leave the Warriors with considerable room to reshape the roster next summer.
For Butler and Green, the equation is straightforward. A strong season could convince Golden State to keep its veteran core around Curry. If the Warriors fall short, the front office will have considerably more freedom to change course.
Golden State has already shown that it is willing to explore major moves in pursuit of another championship run. Curry taking less money only gives the organization more options.
Warriors Futures Come With a Familiar Risk
There is a betting wrinkle here, too.
Golden State remains the type of team that can attract attention in NBA championship futures markets simply because Curry is still Curry. Yet his latest contract does little to settle the more important question for bettors: how much can the Warriors reasonably expect from an aging core?
Curry played only 43 games last season, while Butler’s availability is another immediate concern. Golden State enters the new campaign without Butler available for the first half of the season, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
That makes Warriors futures a different proposition from the dynasty years, when bettors largely knew what they were buying.
Golden State now carries considerably more roster and health uncertainty. The Curry name still commands attention, but anyone looking at outright, win-total or playoff markets has to account for how much the Warriors can get from their veterans across a full season.
Another Star Chase Could Change the Picture
The more intriguing development may come next summer.
Golden State’s financial position could allow the franchise to pursue another major name once Butler and Green’s current contracts expire. ESPN has already identified the Warriors’ 2027 offseason as potentially franchise-altering.
That possibility gives Curry’s extension a second layer.
Golden State has secured its franchise player without paying the absolute maximum, while simultaneously approaching an offseason in which much of the roster could be reconsidered.
For sportsbooks and bettors, any eventual star acquisition would force a fresh assessment of Golden State’s championship credentials. Until then, the Warriors remain an unusual futures proposition: Curry provides the certainty, while almost everything surrounding him remains open to change.
Golden State Has Bought Itself Options
Curry’s extension does not guarantee another championship push, nor does it automatically signal the end for Butler or Green.
What it does is give Golden State room to make those decisions later.
The Warriors know Curry will be there. They now have a season to determine which veterans should still be standing beside him, and bettors watching Golden State will have essentially the same puzzle to solve.
