Miami Gets Its Midfield Heavyweight
Inter Miami have completed the signing of former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro on a free transfer.
The 34-year-old has agreed to a contract running through the end of MLS’s shortened 2027 season. Miami also hold an option that could keep him at the club through the 2028-29 campaign.
Casemiro arrives with five Champions League titles, domestic trophies in England and extensive experience with Brazil. He also featured at the 2026 World Cup before completing his move to the United States.
On paper, it is another statement signing for a Miami squad already packed with familiar faces. Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul now have one of football’s most decorated defensive midfielders behind them.
The Discovery Rights Wrinkle
The announcement was quickly followed by confirmation that Major League Soccer is reviewing a tampering allegation against Inter Miami.
The case revolves around the league’s discovery rights system. LA Galaxy held priority rights for Casemiro, which meant another MLS club could not freely negotiate with him without first acquiring that priority.
Inter Miami and the Galaxy eventually reached a settlement that allowed the transfer to move forward. The terms have not been released, and MLS says details will remain private while its investigation continues.
The central question is whether Miami contacted Casemiro or advanced negotiations before properly securing the Galaxy’s rights. MLS has not disclosed the exact allegation, possible penalties or a timetable for its decision.
It is classic MLS: one of the biggest names available on a free transfer, followed immediately by several paragraphs about allocation rules and administrative priority.
Beckham Welcomes Another Global Name
Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham said he was proud to welcome Casemiro and his family to the club.
Miami’s ownership sees the Brazilian as more than another famous shirt seller. His positioning, defensive work and experience should give the team added control in midfield, especially in matches where their attacking stars leave space behind them.
Casemiro said he remains motivated to improve and win trophies. After successful spells with Real Madrid and Manchester United, he now joins a club expected to compete for every available prize.
What The Probe Means for Fans and Bettors
For now, Casemiro remains an Inter Miami player. MLS has not announced that the transfer is being cancelled, nor has it said the midfielder is suspended or ineligible.
That distinction matters for bettors. The investigation itself should not carry more weight than confirmed team news. Casemiro’s registration, fitness and expected debut are the details most likely to affect Miami’s match odds and midfield markets in the near term.
Possible fines, compensation or roster penalties could become relevant later, but guessing the punishment before MLS completes its review would be little more than a punt on league bureaucracy.
