Betano’s pre-tournament data suggests national pride is already steering World Cup betting bets, which is fun for pub arguments but not always kind to a betting balance.
Fans Are Backing Their Own Teams
Kaizen Gaming’s Betano analysed more than 230,000 bets placed across its markets as of June 4, 2026, and found a strong home-team pull ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. In Argentina, 79% of Betano users backed Argentina to win the tournament, while 75% of Brazilian users picked Brazil. German and Portuguese bettors were not quite as starry-eyed, but 57% in each market still chose their own national teams.
Colombia offered a fun twist. The national team took 19% of outright winner selections among Colombian users, behind Portugal at 24%.
In countries without a participating team, including Bulgaria, Denmark, Peru and Romania, bettors most often picked Portugal, Spain and France.
Player Props Tell the Same Story
The loyalty effect also shows up in player betting markets. Cristiano Ronaldo drew 21% of tournament MVP bets globally, ahead of Lamine Yamal at 12% and Kylian Mbappé at 10%.
For the Golden Boot, Mbappé led with 26%, followed by Harry Kane at 12% and Ronaldo at 8%.
In Argentina, Lionel Messi was the most popular choice to finish as top assist provider, taking 29% of local bets. In Colombia, Luis Díaz drew 24% of local top goalscorer bets, while James Rodríguez took 43% of top assist selections.
Why Heart Bets Can Be Expensive
There is nothing wrong with a patriotic punt, as long as players know what they are buying. A bet on your country can make a match feel louder, but it can also cloud judgment. You start seeing destiny where the market sees odds.
Research into online sports betting has found that bettors can show home bias, meaning they lean toward local or home teams in ways that do not improve results and can distort their betting choices.
Betano’s World Cup Role Adds Extra Visibility
Betano is not just watching the tournament from the sidelines. FIFA named the Kaizen Gaming brand an Official Tournament Supporter for Europe and South America, covering a World Cup that runs from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, Mexico and the United States.
FIFA also said Betano would offer responsible gaming tools, including financial limits, time management and 24/7 customer support.
For players, the best use of Betano’s data is as a mirror. If your bet slip looks suspiciously like your passport, pause before tapping confirm. Cheer with the heart, bet with the head, and remember that the sportsbook does not pay extra for national anthem volume.
